Faculty Associate Members
A Faculty Associate Membership may be granted by a CFIS unit when a faculty member with an academic appointment outside of the CFIS unit is contributing to the CFIS unit's academic life. A membership is an unofficial position between the external member and the CFIS unit. Faculty Associate Members are granted terms up to three years in duration, renewable as long as the Faculty Associate Member maintains faculty member status either at UBC or another postsecondary institution in British Columbia.
Current UBC Faculty Members
A Faculty Associate Membership is available to an active faculty member of any UBC campus when there is a need for a member of one department to have a formal arrangement to participate in teaching and research activities in a CFIS unit, but when a joint academic appointment is not necessary.
Faculty Associate Members must continue to meet the expectations and obligations of their official (home) academic departments and faculties during the term of their associate membership.
Research Grants
If the Faculty Associate Member does not hold an official academic appointment--either fully or jointly--in a CFIS unit, a separate, written agreement between the CFIS Principal and the Dean of the faculty member’s home faculty is required to approve, open, and administer research grants through the CFIS unit. Such agreement will be made on a grant-by-grant basis.
Current faculty associate members may request to apply for and to open research grants in CFIS via an application form. Please note that these requests may only be made by members with tenure-track appointments at UBC.
Faculty Members of Other Postsecondary Institutions in British Columbia
An active faculty member from another academic institution within British Columbia may associate with a CFIS unit if she/he wishes to collaborate on research or provide services to a CFIS unit. External Associate Members may neither teach, be paid by, nor hold a research grant at UBC without a Board-approved faculty appointment.
Faculty Members of Postsecondary Institutions Outside of British Columbia
External faculty members who do not meet the above criteria may request a visiting faculty appointment
UBC Policies and Procedures
All current and prospective Associate Members are advised of UBC policies and procedures, noting in particular Policy 85 on Scholarly Integrity, Policy 87 on Research, Policy 88 on Patents and Licensing, and Policy 97 on Conflict of Interest and Conflict of Commitment. The procedures and policies may be amended from time to time and such amendments are binding.
Faculty Associate Members are expected to maintain the highest professional standards while in their CFIS unit and should become familiar with the UBC Respectful Environment Statement for Students, Faculty and Staff.
Membership Form
CFIS Administrators should process Faculty Associate Memberships on the membership form (MS Word format). Please attach the prospective member's updated CV, unless the candidate is already appointed to a CFIS unit.
Current CFIS faculty members who seek membership in a non-CFIS department should contact the head of the host department for the appropriate form.
